As a child in the mining town of Timmins , Ontario , Verna quickly entered a life of the imagination, beginning at an early age to draw and sculpt. By the time she reached her teens, she was painting with both oils and watercolours and continuing to work with clay. Discouraged from pursuing an artistic career by her parents and teachers, she instead became a teacher, continuing to practice her art as time allowed. During her years as an educator, she taught in both elementary and secondary schools and at university, with specialities in visual art, history, and humanities.

By the 1980s, from her home studio near Toronto , she was offering portraits in oils, watercolours, hand-pulled prints, and works in stained glass. Her love of experimentation led her to the use of other media, including acrylics, pastels and encaustic, and with the acrylics, the production of sculptural works on canvas. She later explored postmodernist ideas and approaches and experimented with installation work, but soon returned to her preference for working on paper and canvas.

With her inspiration coming from both the visible world and the world unseen, her work ranges from purely representational to abstract. It sometimes offer a powerful symbolic quality in its meditations upon timeless themes of the origins of the cosmos and of existence, of the natural cycles of life, of who we are and our relationship with the environment. She makes use of a wide variety of media and scale, with approaches extending from Renaissance oil technique to an innovative use of varied natural materials to generate striking three dimensional effects.

Verna’s prizewinning work, formerly shown in major galleries in the Toronto area, has, since her move west, been seen and been honoured in major juried shows in Victoria, Vancouver, Sidney, and Sooke, and is to be found in private, corporate and university collections in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. She is currently a member of the Victoria Sketch Club, the Island Illustrators Society, and the Canadian Federation of Artists, and a Life Member of the Ontario Society of Artists.
